I’ve seen the power that living with gratitude can have, but often wonder is it enough to make a list? To try to find a moment from each day to be grateful for? To say “thank You for” in each of my prayers? These things might help me get into more thankful habits, like a workout for my gratitude muscle, but is it enough? Is it possible to give enough thanks for the magnificent gift of salvation?
I have been claimed as a child of the One, True God. All my debts are paid. I am wiped clean. There is truly nothing left to fear. It is incomprehensible. Now what? I know there is no thankfulness exercise I can do to come close to matching this gift. The only way to truly express my thanksgiving to God is to live it. In every second, in every action, in every interaction. Every time I hear the song “I Then Shall Live” by Gloria Gaither, my heart begs God to give me the strength and clarity to live my gratitude just like this:
I then shall live as one who’s been forgiven;
I’ll walk with joy to know my debts are paid.
I know my name is clear before my Father;
I am His child, and I am not afraid.
So greatly pardoned, I’ll forgive another;
The law of love I gladly will obey.
