This verse has been one of my favorites for many years. It says that our God can take all the “yucky”, bad things that happen to us and use them for His good.
I was reminded of that again about two years ago when our little two-year-old grandson lost about half of his foot in a tragic lawnmower accident. As I sat beside him in the emergency room, I stared at his mangled foot and cried. Why? How can this be used for good?
The answers began to come quickly. I tried to calm him, but he could have little pain medication because the staff was concerned that he would go into shock. As I sat there Grandpa Bruce came over and began singing Jesus Loves Me. (This was Grandpa and Chad’s song from the time Chad was a baby.) Immediately he settled down.
The flight surgeon arrived and soon afterward asked me what he could do to keep Chad calm because they needed all the extra room in the helicopter for equipment. I explained that the only thing that kept him calm was Jesus Loves Me. The surgeon winked at me and said, “That’s great I know all the verses.” We knew Chad was in His Father’s care.
Then, at the hospital whenever doctors or nurses would come in to ask if they could listen to his heart, Chad replied, “You mean where Jesus lives?” We will never know how many lives that little boy touched with his childlike faith. God was using even this tragedy for good.
PRAYER: Lord, you are good! You desire the best for your children. Open our hearts to see the good even when our eyes cannot. Amen
