How Much Do You Think You're Worth?
by Rick Warren
“You are coming to Christ, the living stone who was rejected by
humans but was chosen as precious by God.” (1 Peter 2:4 GW)
How much do you think you're worth? I'm not talking about your net worth; I'm talking about your self-worth. Don't ever confuse your valuables with your value as a person. You can be rich or poor, but it has nothing to do with your value as a person.
There are two things that determine value in life:
Value is what someone is willing to pay for something.
Value depends on who has owned something in the past.
Based on these two things, what's your value? Ask yourself, “Who owns me?” and “What was paid for me?” The Bible says, “You have been bought and paid for by Christ, so you belong to him” (1 Corinthians 7:23a LB).
You belong to God, and Jesus paid for you with his life. The cross proves your value.
Nobody has ever paid a greater ransom price than God paid for you! You're acceptable, and you're valuable.
Peter uses the imagery of a building project to illustrate our value. God is building this stone building that represents the Church, the family of God, and you're one of the stones. “You are coming to Christ, the living stone who was rejected by humans but was chosen as precious by God” (1 Peter 2:4 GW). Jesus is the living stone. He was perfect, but some people still rejected him. Some of you may think, “If I could just be perfect, then I would be accepted.” No! Jesus was perfect, but even he wasn't accepted by everyone. But, he was “chosen by God as valuable.”
God is building his Church, but it’s not found in temples or church buildings. God lives in people, and you are his spiritual house. Peter says that you're a living stone. When you give your life to Christ, you become a building block in God's great plan.
I just received my grocery ads and there are a few items I'd like to bring to your attention. My favorite this week is the Charmin Basic bath tissue at Fareway! (This is the Le Mars Fareway ad, so check your local ad to see if you have similar deals.) We have the Charmin Basic 4 double rolls @ 3/$4 with the in-ad store coupon. This comes out to 33.2 cents per double roll (or 16.6 cents/single roll) and is well below my stock-up price of .19/single roll. If you add manufacturer's coupons to this it is even better! The database shows .25 coupons in the 4/27 P&G insert, but be sure to read your coupon carefully since I don't have this coupon, and I'm not sure whether is it good on the Basic 4-packs. If it is, you may use 3 of these in addition to your store coupon. With or without the manufacturer's coupons, it's a great deal! Fareway also has Hunt's Ketchup 24 oz. @ .88, Toast'Em Pop-Ups @ 5/$5 ($1 each), store brand Corn Flakes @ .99 with in-ad coupon, and store brand cream cheese @ .99. They also have Oscar Mayer turkey bologna or turkey cotto salami @ .99 and Reeser's 15-16oz. salads @ 4/$5 ($1.25 ea.). I am not finding any other coupons, but be sure to check the database before heading out in case some become available!
At Hy-Vee we have several in-ad store coupons including Midwest Country Fare bath tissue @ .69, store brand cottage cheese 12 oz. @ .98, store brand pizza crust @ 3/$1, store brand freezer pops @ .99, store brand mac & cheese @ 3/$1, and store brand tuna @ .48. The also have in-ad coupons for Country Pride chicken breasts @ $4.88, Hunt's ketchup @.69, Kraft BBQ sauce @ .69, and Jack's Pizzas @ 3/$6. The pizza isn't a great deal, but it's not bad if you have a manufacturer's coupon from the 5/18 Smart Source insert to stack with the store coupon. They also have Dannon Greek yogurt @ .78 (select varieties), iceberg lettuce @ .88/head, and General Mills cereal @ $1.78. If the Light & Fit is included in the yogurt sale, you may find a $1/3 printable here, and there are various coupons for the cereal at Pillsbury.com, BettyCrocker.com, and coupons.com. You will not get below my stock up price of under $1/box, but if you need cereal, it's not a bad deal at all!
That's my quick rundown for the week! Feel free to share if you see any great deals!
FYI - At Hy-Vee on Tuesdays, if you spend $20, you automatically earn $0.20 on fuel saver from now through June!

I am looking at the coming week's grocery deals, and as you may have guessed by the title, my favorite item is the ground beef!
So let's start with Fareway. I am not sure if this is a corporate ad, so be sure to check your local ad since there may be some differences. The first thing that jumped off the page at me was the 80% ground beef @ $1.99/lb. in 10lb. tubes or $2.19/lb. in smaller packages (limit 10 lb.)! I have not seen ground beef this low in a long time! I like the 80% for grilling burgers. *Here's a little bonus tip for when you buy that big tube: Divide and put into quart-sized freezer bags (1 lb. each), then flatten the beef into the shape of the square bag, squeezing out the air. This will allow your beef to freeze and thaw faster, plus it stacks nicely in your freezer! Then, when I take it out for grilling, I can cut the square into quarters and I'll have 4 square burgers ready to go! Now back to the Fareway ad...to go with the grilling theme, we also have the 38 oz. bottle of Heinz ketchup @ $1.48 (limit 1), Blue Bunny ice cream 4 qt. pail @ $3.99, Lay's potato chips @ $1.88, and Oscar Mayer hot dogs @ .99. We also have a store coupon for Kraft Miracle Whip @ $1.99. Coupons to go with these deals are as follows: There could be .50/1 for Heinz ketchup in the 5/4 Red Plum insert and a .75/1 or $1/2 coupon in the 5/11 Smart Source insert. There is a limit of one with the store coupon, so hopefully you will have the .75/1 manufacturer's coupon in your insert. We also have Cool Whip @ .99, Van Camp's baked beans @ .77 and Old Orchard frozen concentrate Lemonades & Harvest Select juices @ .88. There is a $1/4 coupon for the Old Orchard here that is valid on the Harvest Selects, bringing the cost to .63 when you buy 4!
Let's look at Hy-Vee! Their regular ad also has the Lay's @ $1.88 and has a store coupon for Pepsi products @ 4/$8.98 that includes the 12 pack cans, 8 pack bottles, or 6 pack bottles. They have Kraft dressings @ 3/$5 and you may find a coupon for these in the 5/18 Smart Source insert. They also have the 4 quart Blue Bunny @ $3.98 (but it includes .03 fuel saver, making it a slightly better deal), .88 hamburger buns and hot dog buns, Bush's beans @ $1.48, Cool Whip @ .98 with store coupon, Chicken of the Sea tuna @ .77, and Barilla pasta @ $1.00 each! The database is showing a $1/2 printable for the Barilla at coupons.com and I found a $1/3 coupon for the Chicken of the Sea while shopping last week, so watch for those in the stores! Did you miss out on the BBQ sauce deal last week? Never fear...Hy-Vee has KC Masterpiece @ .99 this week. I am not currently seeing a coupon for this, but be sure to search the database before heading out. Also, the Le Mars local ad shows Garland Jack's Secret Six BBQ sauce at only .49/bottle, so if you'll be in town, pick some up (limit of 6)! While you're there, you can also pick up some Old El Paso Taco Shells @ .59 that is shown in the local ad!
Those are my favorites this week!
Happy Savings and have a safe Memorial Day weekend if you'll be on the road!
2 Corinthians 5:17 says, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!"
I can imagine what people would have said about Rahab after the walls of Jericho fell and they discovered who had hidden the Israeli spies. I'll bet it really blew their minds when they found out that only Rahab and her family survived the battle. How in the world did that woman get saved? everyone probably wondered. Who is she anyway? I thought she was a lady of the evening. I wonder if that was God or the Devil using her. She's not even good enough for God to save like that. Can't you just hear it?
Consider people you know now who have lived sinful lives, doing everything and anything they wanted. But one day they hears the good news of Christ and received him into their lives, never to be the same! They began to live out their commitment to Christ, but their reputation preceded them. The grumbling seemed almost inevitable: "I knew them when they were.. . . They're not good enough for the blessings God's giving them. There's something wrong with this picture. People just don't change like that."
Rahab did. She recognized the truth when she heard it. She sacrificed her business for what she believed. She was skillful in transferring her benefits to the people who mattered most to her. This "bad girl" believed in the God of the Israelites and her life changed for good. . .forever.
Please pray for our 1st Annual Swing for the Green golf tournament on Friday. Pray for good weather and a great turnout. We still have room for a few more golfers so give us a call and come for the fun!
After a couple weeks off to spend time with our new grandbaby, I'm again looking at the grocery ads for the week!
We'll start with Fareway, based on the Le Mars ad. Please check your local ads for specifics! If you're hungry for some brownies, or just want to add to your pantry, we have Pillsbury brownie mix @ .99. I also see Land O Lakes Lemonade 1/2 gallon for .99, Kraft Salad dressing @ 1.88, Red Delicious apples @ .76/lb., Totino's pizza rolls @10/$10, and store brand white bread @ .98. I am not currently seeing coupons available for any of these items, so be sure to check the database again before heading to the store, as some may come available later...particularly check on Sundays when new coupons come out!
Hy-Vee has a 2-Day Sale on May 15 & 16 that includes 7-Up 6 pack bottles @ 6/$10, bananas @.35/lb., Old Orchard Juice Cocktail select varieties @ .99, Michelina's Zap'ems @ .59, Peter Pan Peanut Butter @ $1.68, and PowerAde 32 oz. @ 15/$8 with store coupon. There should be a coupon for $1/5 on the Michelina's here, bringing them down to .39 each when you buy 5! This could be good for a quick lunch with the kids being home over the summer! And again, be sure to check the database for the other items before shopping!
In Hy-Vee's regular ad we have Dole classic iceberg, shredded lettuce, or classic coleslaw @.88/bag and earn .01 fuel saver with each bag purchased. There are store coupons for Crystal Light drink mix @ 3/$5, Chef Boyardee pasta buy 4 @.98 get one free, and Doritos or Ruffles chips @ 3/$5. Remember, you can stack manufacturer's coupons with store coupons, and the database shows there may be a $1/2 coupon for the Crystal Light in the 4/27 Smart Source insert, bringing that price to 3/$4. I am seeing a $1/4 printable for the Chef Boyardee at coupons.com, making your price $2.92 for 5 cans when you use both coupons (think kids at home this summer)! The database notes that this is a manufacturer's coupon that says "redeemable at Walmart" on it. Be aware that this does NOT mean that you cannot use it elsewhere. If it says "manufacturer's coupon", has a remit to address, and if it doesn't say, "redeemable ONLY at Walmart", that is only a suggestions and you should still be able to use it anywhere. Be aware your cashier may or may not know this and you may need to gently and patiently educate them of this. :-) Ready for BBQ season? Time to STOCK UP on Sweet Baby Ray's barbeque sauce @ .99...but WAIT...that's not all! There should be a $1/2 coupon here, bringing the price to only .49/bottle when you buy 2, or print two coupons and buy 4 at that price! (It tells me I've already printed that coupon, so I could either try a different computer or perhaps I'll be okay with several already in my stock from a previous sale!) ;-)
Those are the deals I'm seeing this week! While it may not seem like there are a lot of available coupons, don't let that discourage you. Sometimes you may come across them when you least expect it! Always be on the lookout for coupons that are stuck to product (known as "peelies") and tear-off coupons on the shelves (known as "tear pads") when you're at the stores! Here is one example from this past week. I was at the meat counter at Fareway, purchasing a small package of Iowa Chops, when my "ever-coupon-searching eyes" saw a coupon on a tear pad on top of the meat counter for...PORK CHOPS! $1 off any package! This is not the first time I have found pork coupons there, so ALWAYS check the top of the meat counter and always be watching for those unexpected surprises! Who knows, you may even find that elusive meat coupon!
We'll be keeping our financial progress posted here each month. We are operating from a shortfall, so our current monthly fundraising goal is $20,000.
